Definition of Network Equipment

Network equipment refers to hardware devices that connect, manage, and secure data communication within a company’s IT infrastructure. In a company, network equipment enables employees to access the internet, company servers, cloud applications, and other resources securely and efficiently. Proper network management ensures reliable connectivity, security, and performance for business operations.

Examples of Network Equipment in SMB IT Management

  • Router – Directs network traffic between local devices and the internet. In SMBs, routers often include firewall and VPN features (e.g., Cisco RV340, Ubiquiti EdgeRouter, Netgear Nighthawk).
  • Switch – Connects multiple devices (computers, printers, servers) within a local network (LAN). Managed switches allow for VLANs and network segmentation (e.g., Cisco Catalyst, TP-Link JetStream).
  • Firewall – Protects the company network from cyber threats by filtering traffic and preventing unauthorized access (e.g., Fortinet FortiGate, Palo Alto Networks, pfSense).
  • Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) – Provides wireless connectivity to employees and guests, often supporting multiple SSIDs and security policies (e.g., Ubiquiti UniFi AP, Aruba Instant On).
  • Modem – Connects the business network to the internet service provider (ISP). Often integrated into a router for SMBs.
  • Network Attached Storage (NAS) – A centralized file storage system that enables data sharing and backups (e.g., Synology DiskStation, QNAP NAS).
  • VPN Gateway – Secures remote access for employees working outside the office (e.g., OpenVPN, Cisco AnyConnect, FortiClient).

IT Management Topics for Network Equipment and Devices

  • Network Security – Implementing firewalls, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), and endpoint protection.
  • Performance Optimization – Using managed switches, VLANs, and QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize critical business applications.
  • Wireless Coverage – Deploying enterprise-grade Wi-Fi access points with proper placement and bandwidth management.
