A departing employee is someone who is leaving the company, either because they resigned or were let go, and is going through the offboarding process.

What the Employee Departure Process Includes

  • Departure Preparation: Once an employee gives notice (or is notified of termination), the process of ending their employment begins. This involves preparing paperwork, transferring responsibilities, finding a replacement, etc.
  • Work and knowledge transfer (training the replacement, handing over projects)
  • Returning company assets (like laptops, phones, keys, access badges, tools, uniforms)
  • Revoking access and permissions: IT shuts down email, software access, and logins to company systems and apps.
  • Final pay and benefits processing
  • Legal and compliance tasks, such as NDAs or non-compete agreements
  • Exit interview with the departing employee
