A departing employee is someone who is leaving the company, either because they resigned or were let go, and is going through the offboarding process.
What the Employee Departure Process Includes
- Departure Preparation: Once an employee gives notice (or is notified of termination), the process of ending their employment begins. This involves preparing paperwork, transferring responsibilities, finding a replacement, etc.
- Work and knowledge transfer (training the replacement, handing over projects)
- Returning company assets (like laptops, phones, keys, access badges, tools, uniforms)
- Revoking access and permissions: IT shuts down email, software access, and logins to company systems and apps.
- Final pay and benefits processing
- Legal and compliance tasks, such as NDAs or non-compete agreements
- Exit interview with the departing employee
