What is Work Order

A work order is an official authorization to perform a specific task, job, or activity. It is typically assigned to an internal staff member (e.g., a maintenance technician or operations team) or an external vendor. A work order can also be known as a service order, job ticket, or work ticket.

Work orders are typically generated in response to:

  • Internal staff requests
  • Scheduled maintenance activities
  • Findings from inspections or audits
  • Customer requests or sales orders

The process for authorizing and issuing a work order can vary depending on the type and size of the business. Initial work requests or issues can be submitted by any employee. Once a work request is reviewed and approved by an authorized manager or supervisor, an official work order is then issued to get the job done.
